The Burrell Project

About the refurbishment

In one of the most significant museum refurbishments of recent years, The Burrell has been revitalised for YOU, the people of Glasgow and visitors to the city.

This work ensures that the world-class collection and its architecturally significant home are safeguarded for the future. It has provided the opportunity to develop innovative and immersive displays and reinterpret the works of art, revealing many wonderful and new stories about them.

Over a third more gallery space allows us to show you important and unique objects, which have not been seen for decades or have never been on permanent display.

For the first time, you'll be able to explore all three floors in the building, through dynamic galleries and displays, special exhibition spaces and the  storerooms on the lower ground floor, where you can learn how objects are cared for while not on display.

Our new outdoor space and outdoor café seating will mean you can enjoy the museum's beautiful parkland setting more than ever before.

Access to the building has been improved with additional entrances and a new central hub, from which you can access all three floors.

A dedicated learning and education centre provides groups with a much-improved opportunity to understand the Collection, including technology to provide more detailed information and opportunities to interact with the works of art on display.

During The Burrell's closure, Glasgow Museums undertook the most comprehensive outreach programme in its history. This has meant that local groups living near The Burrell and Pollok Country Park have been able to get involved in developing our new displays.

This work has resulted in new approaches to the interpretation of objects, including finding out more about the people who made them and some of the people who have owned them.

This is the start of an exciting era of rediscovery of The Burrell Collection.

Why not catch up with the progress of the project on our blog and our social channels.

The galleries and displays

A sneak peek at the exciting new approach

Innovative and immersive new displays now give you the chance to get to know William Burrell and his family, their life at Hutton Castle and how their collection was part of their everyday lives.

You'll also be able to enjoy all of your old favourites again, like the works by Degas and Rodin, the magnificent medieval tapestries and the beautiful stained glass.
